Building Ops Goes Above and Beyond to Prepare campus for exams
Proactive exam room preparations
With DES now heating 70% of the core campus Building Ops staff took it upon themselves to take a little extra care to ensure that exam rooms would not be adversely effected by system commissioning. FMs and custodial staff were actively checking spaces last week to ensure the temperatures were just right as well the BMS team members have been incredible troubleshooting problems as they are discovered. Other than a minor power failure at Buchanan (that was resolved within minutes) our exam spaces have been well supported through a challenging construction cycle – way to go everyone. You are awesome!!
Building Ops readies SRC and Osborn gym for exam week
Utility workers re-lamped SRC last November in preparation for exam week. Setting up 1,500 tables wouldn’t have been possible without the joint effort of the labourers, custodial workers and utility workers. Students taking their exams in a very cold gym would be more difficult had it not been for the CAITs who replaced the control valve.
Updated list of buildings served by the DES as of December 10 is now available
Check out the latest DES updates to know which buildings are running on the district energy hot water heating system and which buildings will be coming online soon.

EAOS Update: Take a look at the Asset Collectors snap shot
Please take a look at our pilot information attached to our EAOS poster in the USB entrance. It will tell you the details in what we’ve completed, how we did it and what we can expect for January.
Marian Lis and Jeff Smith will be meeting with all heads to review the attributes collected.
We’ve also created a framework for the Roles & Responsibilities goal. We can now start the conversation on who should own and operate assets in the future. Then we can focus on why assets are important, how to maintain them, and how to structure our responsibilities better so we eliminate conflicts. We’ve posted the framework to the EAOS poster as well, please take a look! (EAOS is like Santa’s elves, we’re working behind the scenes but we need your involvement, so please check it out!)
Start planning for winter weather conditions on campus
In the event of heavy snow, the official source for snow closure information is the UBC homepage – www.ubc.ca.
Prepare for extreme weather conditions:
- Review Building Ops snow procedures. Know your department contact in the event of a snow day.
- If your position is deemed ‘essential’ in the event of a campus closure, make sure you know your rights and responsibilities.
- Learn more about Building Ops’ plans in the event the university cancels classes or curtails non-essential services during inclement weather.
In the event of snow:
- Visit the UBC homepage to learn if classes are canceled or non-essential services are curtailed.
- If campus is open but you cannot report to work due to the snow, contact your supervisor immediately.

Presidential Search Update
Lindsay Gordon, Chancellor and Presidential Search Committee Chair, published a broadcast email regarding the UBC Presidential Search. Preliminary discussions at the December 2 meeting resulted in the development of the presidential position profile, which will be finalized after receiving stakeholder input. Consultation with UBC stakeholders is critical.
Public town halls will be held Wednesday, January 13, from 11: 45 am – 1:00 pm. Formal meeting notices for the town halls will be sent out on January 5, 2016. Everyone is encouraged to attend.
Once finalized and approved by the Board of Governors, the presidential position profile will be distributed via broadcast email as well as published on this website. In the meantime, submit your comments in confidence by joining the conversation or by sending an email to president.search@ubc.ca.
UBC Board of Governors elects Stuart Belkin as new chair
UBC’s Board of Governors has elected Stuart Belkin as the board’s incoming chair. Belkin is chair and chief executive office of Belkorp Industries Inc., a private Vancouver-based management holding company. He is also chair of Rogers Sugar Inc., which owns Lantic Sugar Ltd., Canada’s largest sugar group. Visit UBC News to read more about it.
