Bringing issues forward can lead to a bright idea
Everyone in Building Ops has the potential of bringing forth a bright idea, just by mere observation. When Liam Nutley, upholsterer, was repairing the aluminum blinds in Geography, he noticed that the bottom slats were very hot. Concerned with the heat loss, he requested his Head, Martin Varma, to bring up the issue and ask for the heat to be regulated and be synchronized with the light system. This suggestion can be about potential energy savings and the Geography building is on the radar for future inclusion to the Continuous Optimization program.

Patricia Saville, Head Service Worker, will be the available first aid attendant on the evening shift Monday through Friday from 6:00 pm – 2:00 am.
Process for Summoning First Aid Attendant in the Evening
- In the event of someone requiring first aid on the evening shift Monday through Friday from 6:00 pm – 2:00 am, they are to call Patricia Saville 604.788.0701 once they have notified their Supervisor.
- The injured individual is to report to the USB first aid room for treatment where they will be met by the First Aid attendant and proceed with treatment and any additional follow up deemed necessary (i.e. return to work, hospital, etc.).
- In the event that the injured individual is unable to be transported to the USB for treatment due to the nature of the injury, Campus First Aid is to be contacted via 604.822.4444 at which point the on-campus Vancouver Fire Department will respond.
- Should Patricia Saville not be available, please contact Campus First Aid at 604.822.4444.
EAOS Update: Asset Data Collection Process in IONA Building is 100% complete
Next step is to organized the data we gathered. Lesson learned…we found that, from going through these 2 pilot buildings, asset data in our current databases is outdated, mislabeled, duplicated and very hard to find. The IONA building pilot proved this as Bill Guest spent 20% of his time physically in the building versus the 80% of his time sifting through data.
The role of the Asset Collector is going to be very important in the future because they will be the ones to identify what information is needed, how it’s kept accurate, and how to have it readily available to you.
We are excited to move forward very soon with a process that means that this info can be at your fingertips as soon as possible. Stay tuned for more “Lessons Learned”…
Check out new resource for assisting colleagues in distress
Everyone plays an important role in creating healthy and respectful work environments.
Faculty and staff can now use a new resource guide, available online and as a printed orange folder, to know what to look for, say, and do to help a colleague in distress.
The resource guide is intended to take the guess-work out of how to help others facing challenges, and to help staff and faculty feel more confident and better equipped to assist someone in the event of a mental health crisis.
Resources guides are available for both the Vancouver and Okanagan campuses.

Search for a pot of gold in the park (in the dark!)…join in a St. Patrick’s Day Event
This St. Patrick’s Day, follow the luck of the Irish into the green glade next door–the Pacific Spirit Park, that is. It’ll be done after nightfall because dusk is the magic hour. The quest for gold begins in front of the Running Room, traipsing through the woods for about an hour, and returning for some delectable happy hour specials at BierCraft Restaurant.
The walk will be rain or shine. Remember to bring a flashlight and/or headlamp and dress appropriately for the weather.
