UBC Gets into Hot Water, Cuts Emissions and Saves Money

In 2007, 90% of the university’s greenhouse gas emissions came from the natural gas-fired plant which created steam that heated 130 buildings on campus. BRDF Generator made a noticeable impact on our electrical demand

The BRDF generator has made a noticeable impact on our BC Hydro demand profile. The two dashed curves on chart #2 represent the 2 MW reduction provided by the generator. Our actual demand trend continues to flat line compared to the predicted trend possibly, due to optimization of existing systems through BMS, construction delays, slower than anticipated growth at TRIUMF and less cooling demand this summer. There were no dramatic temperature events this hot summer that would have forced an increase on the campus chiller demands thereby causing an increased electrical peak.
