100,000 Service Requests Milestone
On September 22, Building Operations achieved a major milestone: we’ve received our 100,000th Service Request!
Thank you everyone for all your hard work and feedback in bringing this system to life. To celebrate, join us for cake and coffee in the USB atrium on September 29th during coffee break at 1:45PM.

Town Halls are coming next month
Major topics for updating at this town hall are:
- Leadership Development Program
- Deferred Maintenance and the current state of our buildings
- EAOS update
Quick updates on:
- contractor activities and reporting
- new construction (building and landscape) handover
- Time Card Project
There will be time for questions. We have heard that some people would like more opportunities for Q&As. While we’ve been trying to get the Q&A portion to happen in our crew talks, where people can have a better discussion and more focused to their area, there is also merit in questions in a larger setting.
Prepare your questions ahead of time. Ask a question that will be relevant to the whole audience. Ask in a way that is constructive – as you are more likely to get a thoughtful answer. And manage your time so that others can ask their questions.
If you want to send your questions in advance to Karyn Magnusson, we will be sure to get ones relevant to the majority answered first.

SUB access plan to be confirmed
If you need to access the SUB to deal with an emergency, please contact the site office located on the North Side of the SUB, or if it’s after hours, see the area security guard. A new access plan will be approved and confirmed over the next few days.
Register now for “Kids to Work Day”
Building Operations, Energy & Water Services, Student Housing & Hospitality Services, and UBC Community Services are encouraging all parents with children in Grade 9 to bring their children to work for the day on November 2, 2016.
Due to the nature of the work done at the university, and the potential safety hazards involved, a guided day of activities (including lunch) will be planned for students who are unable to spend the day on the job with their parent. Parents are also invited to the lunch.
Registration Deadline: Friday, October 21, 2016
For more details or to register, please contact Caroline Soriano at 604-822-4178.
October Safety Competition: Spot the Risks!
We introduced a new safety game competition in last week’s newsletter, where a new photo will be released each month. Then, in your shop talks, identify as many risks as you see in that photo. For every risk/ problem identified, your shop will receive 1 point. Submit answers via email to Alex Bradshaw by the last day of the month. At the end of the month, the responses will be tallied and points awarded. The shop with the most points at the end of the year wins a prize!
For the photo below, identify as many risks as you can and send them in by October 31st to Alex Bradshaw.

With increased activity and lots of new people on campus, please be diligent about security. Remember to lock vehicles when stepping away for a job and lock up personal valuables in lockers.
Harvest Feast 2016 was a blast!
How often do you get to mingle and share a 3-course meal with colleagues from all across the university? Lucky guests of Building Operations enjoyed dinner and the arts at this year’s Harvest Feastival. Prepared with fresh produce from UBC Farm, the meal was prepared by one of UBC’s best chefs. After the delicious meal, guests had an opportunity to meet and take photos with Professor Santa Ono and enjoyed an evening in the Arts and Culture district of UBC. Perhaps you’ll join us next year.
